1959: “The Jokers” by Bruce Davidson

These pictures are excerpts from Bruce Davidson’s photographic essay The Jokers - a Brooklyn street gang. Introduced by a social worker, Davidson spent 11 months with the gang, many of home had very troubled backgrounds, even homeless.

”In time they allowed me to witness their fear, depression and anger. I soon realised that I, too, was feeling their pain. In staying close to them, I uncovered my own feelings of failure, frustration and rage.”
