1908: Japan by Arnold Genthe

Arnold Genthe (1869 –1942) photographed San Francisco’s Chinatown, and the 200 surviving images are the only record of the district before the Earthquake and Fire of 1906. Genthe captured the Earthquake and Fire too. But he was also very succesful as a high-society photographer, taking portraits of Sarah Bernhardt, Jack London, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, John D. Rockefeller, Greta Garbo and Anna Pavlova.

These photographs were taken on a six month visit to Japan in 1908.
