1971: David Bowie’s Man-dress

Bowie is wearing what he described as a ‘man-dress’, created by then-en-vogue fashion designer Michael Fish. The pictures of Bowie - and his then wife Angela and protegé Freddi Buretti - were taken at Bowie’s home, a rented apartment in the Victorian mansion Haddon Hall, in Beckhenham near London.

Bowie wore the dress for the cover of his album, The Man Who Sold The World, which was recorded in Haddon Hall. The sleeve was judged to be too controversial for the American market and was replaced by a cartoon drawing of a James Dean-esque cowboy with a gun under his arm. Subtle.
