1950: Marilyn in the woods

LIFE Photographer Ed Clark had a friend working at 20th Centruy Fox. The friend called Ed to tell him about a “hot tomato”signing at the studio. Ed took the 24-year-old “hot tomato” into the trees of L.A.’s Griffith park for a photoshoot. But when Ed sent the pictures to his paymasters at LIFE, their response was “Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?” and the pictures were never published. Three years later, she was on the cover of LIFE.
