1945: “Deaths Head” Hitler Postage Stamp

“Operation Cornflakes was a mission to trick the German postal service into inadvertently delivering anti-Nazi propaganda to German citizens.

“Special planes airdropped bags of false, but properly addressed, mail in the vicinity of bombed mail trains. When recovering the mail, the postal service would confuse the false mail for the real thing. Copies of this ‘death head’ stamp were inserted in the envelopes along with other propaganda materials.”

    Note that the Text “Deutsches Reich” (German Empire) was changed to “Futsches Reich”. “Futsch” is a colloquial adjective that means something like “gone”, “lost”, “bust”, “down the drain” …
