1987: 50th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge

“In May 1987, as part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the bridge closed to automobiles. However, this celebration attracted 750,000 to 1,000,000 people, causing the center span of the bridge to flatten out under the weight.

Several of my friends were going, and they invited me along. Knowing that the crowd would be massive, I “did the math” and figured that the Bridge might be subjected to unsustainable weight! I urged my friends not to go. I was glad, of course, that nothing bad really happened, but I felt sort of vindicated in learning that the Bridge had flattened out!
