I bought this curious print for 5,000 lire (about $5) in the 1990s at an outdoor antique market in Milan, Italy. Turns out it’s from a book titled “Il Custume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli” (Ancient and Modern Costumes of All Peoples) published in the 1820s. It portrays a game called “Ciueca” (pronounced “Cheweyca”) played in Chile by aboriginal people. But as a Canadian, I immediately saw it as a hockey faceoff.
I have included screenshots of the text taken from Google Books (in original Italian – http://bit.ly/14pDK4T) if anyone wants to take a shot at translation in the comments below.
