My grandfather Bill Stalker served under Robert Blair “Paddy” Mayne in the 1st Battalion SAS. He was brought up in Liverpool with his nine sisters and two brothers, initially serving with the Liverpool Scottish before volunteering for the SAS and becoming one of the first ever commandos. He did a lot of reconnaissance work, so always had a camera with him. These are some of his shots taken in Malta and Sicily. He had a close shave in Termoli, Sicily, when the lorry he had been sitting in a few moments before was hit by a mortar, killing a large number of his fellow soldiers. Someone ordered him to go and sit in the lorry behind at the last minute – and to that I owe my existence. After stints in Egypt, Libya, Palestine, France and Germany, Bill returned home safely to Liverpool where he spent the rest of his days. We are lucky enough have pictures to illustrate some of the amazing stories he told us.
