There was something specially gifted about the people of previous centuries that I believe has become lost to us now. Ernst Haeckel had what I would describe as an inner eye that was able to both perceive the world around him and convey it in illustrated form as magnificent in aesthetic beauty as it is in exquisite scientific detail.
