July 31- August 2, 1970: Powder Ridge Rock Festival

“The Powder Ridge Rock Festival was scheduled to be held July 31- August 2, 1970  in Middlefield, Connecticut. A legal injunction forced the event to be canceled, keeping the musicians away; but a crowd of 30,000 attendees arrived anyway, to find no food, no entertainment, no adequate plumbing, and at least seventy drug dealers. William Manchester wrote: “Powder Ridge was an accident waiting to happen, and it happened.” Volunteer doctor William Abruzzi declared a drug “crisis” on 1 August and said “Woodstock was a pale pot scene. This is a heavy hallucinogens scene.”

The girl in the last photo is stunning. Hard to believe she’s now in her sixties!

I think a similar photo spread of such a show today would have at least ONE overweight person, what do you think?

I’m looking thru these, and remembering the day…when I came across the photo of the VW bus. I have the finger carving that’s mounted on top of the “F**k you bus”. My mother bought it while garage sailing in West St Paul Minnesota back in the late 1980′s, and she gave it to me (yup…my mother gave me the finger). It has a place of pride on the mantel of my lake cottage in northern Minnesota.
